Coney Island Aritst Clubhouse 2006

Yesterday marked the start of the Coney Island Aritst Clubhouse documentary project. The Clubhouse, pioneered last summer by Steve Powers aka ESPO, was a smashing success the first time around, so Steve has decided to continue on with the project this year. We're going to spend the remainder of the month of August in Coney documenting Steve painting signs, being on the recieving end of confused stares, and causing general trouble and bewilderment amongst the crowds on Coney Island.

Things jumped off this year with the christening of the inflatable limo. Six tanks of helium were used to inflate the limo to full capacity. Once it was ready Steve and crew (with a NY Times photographer in tow) guided the luxury derigible down Surf Avenue, around the corner onto 12th Street and directly onto the beach. The spectacle was greeted with curiosity and delight by all.

We'll keep the blog updated with current news from Coney over the next few weeks, and we hope to produce a short from the footage we shoot by December. If you are intested in visiting Coney Island, you can find directions here, and for more about the Coney Island Aritst Clubhouse, check out this. Finally, you can find ESPO here.
