Zoe Strauss and Alex Lukas interview up on the Megawords site

Our two most recent interviews with Zoe Strauss and Alex Lukas, now up for your regard.

From Zoe Strauss, photographer and image maker:
"I think about it all the time. In terms of portraits, it’s an image of a real person. It’s not abstract. It’s not, ‘This is representing blah blah blah.’ It’s a real person that I’ve had a real interaction with. And almost always it’s someone I had a strong affection for that happened in that moment. I think a lot of what it means when these images go out into the world and how they get shown—what it then means is—how people are reading this image—"

From Alex Lukas, small publisher and screenprinter. Orginally from Boston, now based in Philly.
You had to go in this underground subway, which is essentially taking you from terminal A to B but in the videos they were talking about how one of those people moving things was going to drop you off in some underground hold. One of the things the guy kept talking about is that once you go underground at the Denver International Airport, you’ll never see the light of day again. So of course I’m on the subway, and I was like this is the end. That kind of experience is something I think other people might find interesting.

Street World - German and Spanish Editions

Last week I recieved a package in the mail from Rebecca at Thames and Hudson. Enclosed were the German and Spanish editions of Street World. Its interesting to see how different publishers in other countries interpret the cover artwork, and its an honor to have the German edition published by National Geographic Deutschland.

Record player

A recent visit from our friend Roman Bejnar gave us a wonderful reason to spend the night gathered around the new studio record player. Records spanning a 60 year range of time were played, warming the room with their sound.

Street World is on the streets

This book was the bane of my existence for nearly a year. Days of resizing photos, creating numerous grids, contacting photogaphers, file prep, etc. etc. etc. I never thought it would be complete. Nevertheless, it exists. I first saw it in the Barnes and Noble bookshop window at Union Square.

Street World was printed in four languages (English, Spanish, French, and German) in five countries (US, UK, FR, ES, DE) with a first edition of over 50,000 copies this is one of the largest projects I've worked on. And not only in circulation; the book is nearly 400 pages and just about 9 inches square. Photos from a great number of professional and amateur photographers alike, including Angela Boatwright, Peter Dean Rickards, Robby Redcheeks, Erbierto Oriol and many, many, many more.

Get your copy of Street World on Amazon. To see more photos of the book, check out our portfolio.

Flipped over car at K&A el stop

I had some errands to do in Center City today and as usual to return home I took the Market Frankford el to the Kensington stop. As I walked down the 3 flights of concrete stairs I could feel something had gone wrong. The large crowds of people intently looking with worried and confused faces into the middle of Kensington Ave. confirmed my suspicions. A black SUV had somehow lost control, finally coming to rest upside down and on top of a another car. It couldn't have happened more than 10 minutes earlier, as police were just putting up yellow "Police Limit" tape. Aan ambulance had just pulled off, rushing the passengers of the SUV to the nearby hospital. I only had a few seconds to snap these photos before jumping on the 60 bus.

Never a dull moment.

Indestructible Wolves of the Apocalypse Junkyard

A monumental piece of literature and art. Max G. Morton.

Indestructible Wolves of the Apocalypse Junkyard is Max G. Morton's seven-story porthole into the sacrilege unknown. Morton takes us from the suburban wasteland of the 1980's and onward to the creepy crawls of a New York that no longer exists, while blurring and crossing cult cinema and music's line between fantasy and reality. From arson-happy skinheads to shootouts with snuff-collecting undercovers, and from Patty Waters' voodoo love to Cupid's syringe, Indestructible Wolves is a sexually charged frenzy of a drug-addled memoir, a true testimony of an authentic original.

This is Heartworm #13, of course, and is a depressingly beautiful filth-filled hardcover, 100 plus page book accompanied by the illustrations of Mark McCoy. The first edition is limited to 500 copies.
