Passing 90’s free paper era, Today’s mainstream is focused on numerous domestic magazines and license magazines from abroad in the field of publication. There was a long period after many publishing companies supported with a large corporation and private sponsors shut down. A few years ago, with self-motivation, small-scale publications such as art books, magazines started to increase. Thanks to the development of ‘fanzine’ culture, there is a stream formed by non-specialized or non-commercial publications. In terms of non-specialized, it is not the same with amateurism. It is to generate publishing company dealing with the issues which are not focused by main publication. It means that a few personal works increase and our culture has diversity.

The existing free paper of art, design, music and fashion faded away as large licensed magazines and commercial magazines flooded. We present all the pieces and works of independent publishing companies which are small but producing outcome steadily. They have various looks and tastes. You can read and purchase books and magazines of small scale publishing companies working in Seoul, Tokyo, New York, L.A., Stockholm, Amsterdam, London and Melbourne. People interested in books and magazines but not knowing where to start can discover works of independent publishing companies. And you can share the stories of publishing with editors and publishers of each company. We hope to have chances to share interest and affection constantly with this exhibition.

Swindle 15 out now

The times they are a-changing. So, we at SWINDLE want to evolve, too. Issue 15 marks the unveiling of our newly redesigned layout. We’ve made the text more engaging, we’ve standardized the fonts, and added two regular columns: James Gaddy’s Classic Graphics delves into the history of iconic logos, and Henry Rollins gives us Dispatches from the Territories. We’ve got a feature on stunt doubles, who risk their lives in anonymity to make movie stars look badass; Doug Pray’s first-person account of making his latest feature documentary, Big Rig; the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s “School of Popular Painting,” an elite group of artists who showcase the thriving urban culture of their country’s capital, Kinshasa; and a fashion spread that is an ode to ‘80s group Strawberry Switchblade. Only SWINDLE can scour the cultural landscape of the globe to give you a mash-up of content this sweet!
